“So have you made your decision yet?”

Ruby slid onto the barstool and asked the question I didn’t have an answer for before she was even settled.

“Hi. Hey, I’m doing great. Thanks for asking, and it’s good to see you, too.”

“If you’re going to avoid answering my question, fix me a Shirley Temple while you’re doing it. I’ll have a grilled ham and cheese to go with it and some fries.”

“Coming right up.”

I put in her order, mixed her drink, and set it in front of her.

“Well?” Looked like she wasn’t going to give up.

It was early yet and the dinner crowd was just starting to arrive. If Ruby had gotten there just a little later, I could probably have used the excuse of being too busy to avoid answering, but I didn’t have that luxury now. Besides, there was no point in avoiding the subject.

“No, I haven’t.” I leaned on the bar in front of her and lowered my voice. “Gabe says he wants me back, but Logan and I are getting along great.”

“Maybe you should make a list.”

“Huh?”

“A list. You make two columns for each of them. One column is for the positives about them and the other is for the negatives. Then you use your brain instead of your heart”—she glanced down and wiggled her eyebrows suggestively—“or other parts of your anatomy to make your decision.”

“What’s that—the scientific method?”

She shrugged.

“Sure. You could call it that. Since you don’t seem to be able to figure out what you want any other way, why not give it a shot?”

“It’s not like I’m trying to decide which make of car to buy, Ruby.”

“Okay, have it your way. But keep it in mind. You’re not going to be able to put off choosing one or the other for long. They’re both fine-looking men, they’re gainfully employed, and they have all their teeth. Someone else is liable to snatch both of them right out from under your nose if you wait too long.”

“Tell the someone to snatch away,” I said. “Then I won’t have to decide.”

I had to fill an order for one of Ginny’s tables, and by the time I did that, the place was starting to fill up. When Ruby’s order came up, I took it to her.

“How’s it going with the convention planning?” I said.

“Not bad. I’ve been running back and forth to Columbus and Cincinnati every day. I didn’t know what I was getting into when I volunteered for this, but it’s keeping me busy.”

Two men who had just seated themselves at the end of the bar demanded my attention, and by the time I’d served them and put in their food order, Ruby was ready for another Shirley Temple. I set it in front of her and started to turn away to check on the other customers at the bar, but she took hold of my arm.

“Stay a second, Ricki,” she said.

She looked troubled, and I immediately started worrying. Ruby had done a great job of staying away from alcohol, but I always worried something was going to cause her to backslide.
